Open Studio Workshops
The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department invites adults to participate in an Open Studio Workshop held on the last Tuesday of each month from 10:00am-12:30pm at The Meeting Place at 1077 East Montague Avenue in the Olde Village area of North Charleston. Each interactive workshop is led by a different local artist and provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Varying skill levels are welcome and the cost is $15, which inlcudes most materials. Registrations are accepted one month in advance and close 2 days prior to the workshop. Space is limited. Participants will be exposed to a unique art experience inspired by photos of Marica’s travels and passion for capturing amazing pictures of fungi (i.e. mushrooms) in the natural world. Contrary to popular belief, this sort of fungus among us is to be preserved not eradicated! |

Quarterly Classes
The Cultural Arts Department offers classes in a wide variety of art disciplines on a quarterly basis. Classes range from one-day seminars to 3-8 week sessions. Call the Cultural Arts Department at (843)740-5854 for more information or to register. A minimum number of participants must be met in order for classes to take place.
Watercolor Journaling w/ Amelia Whaley
Participants will explore watercolor journaling in this four week class co-sponsored by the North Charleston Artist Guild. Journaling with watercolor is an enjoyable way to visually capture memories, destinations, nature, personal goals, thoughts, and feelings. In addition to exercising the creative spirit, students will gain confidence in pencil rendering and working with watercolor. No experience necessary. Students must bring own materials. Materials list will be provided upon registration. Early registration is encouraged and ends one week prior to first class.

Painting Workshop – Nature: God’s Art
Deborah Meyer will instruct adults ages 18 and up on how to paint skies using oils or acrylics in this 2-day landscape painting workshop that includes painting techniques such as scumbling, glazing, and color theory. Students must bring their own materials: paints, brushes, canvases, easels (if the use of a table is not preferred). Early registration is encouraged and ends one week prior to first day of workshop.

April 23 & 25, 2012; 9:30am-12:30pm
Rendering in Pen and Ink w/ Gary Galarza
Gain confidence in your line art and leave the eraser at home for this 3 week class. Instruction will include crosshatching techniques using sepia colored pen and inks to build gradations in simple to intricate renderings. Displays using inanimate objects that possess different textures and shapes will be utilized. Students will receive a take home photograph image and will produce their own creative renderings to further assist with perspective, design and style. Early registration is encouraged and ends one week prior to first class.

Kid’s Art Class: Be Creative, Artistic and Colorful!
Karol Skelly will lead children ages 8-12 on an exploration of different media inspired by the works of famous artists. Some of the media students will learn to use are watercolors, acrylics, water based oils, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, and mixed media. Lessons in color theory and the techniques used by the artists will inspire students to create an art book reflecting their artistic inspirations that can be added to student portfolios. Materials are included in class fee. Space is limited and a minimum number of students must be met for the class to meet. Early registration is encouraged and ends one week prior to the first class.

Teaching artists or arts agencies may submit proposals to present classes and workshops in visual arts, photography, crafts, music, dance, theater, and more. Proposal forms are available for download from the “Applications & Registration Forms” page on the Cultural Arts Department section of the City’s website.

North Charleston Farmers Market Art Demonstrations
The 2012 North Charleston Farmers Market opens April 19 and takes place every Thursday through October 25 in the Olde Village of North Charleston, 1055 East Montague Avenue. The market offers an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce, and features art & craft booths, food vendors, and entertainment. Enjoy visual art demonstrations by local artists every 2nd and 4th Thursday. The market is open from 3:00pm to 7:00pm; art demonstrations take place from 4:00-6:00pm.

Summer Arts Camps
Summer Arts Camps are offered in June and July for children ages 5-13. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. A minimum number of registered students are required for the camps to take place. Registration ends one week prior to start of each camp. Registration forms are available for download from the “Applications & Registration Forms” page. For more information, or to request a registration form by mail, contact the Cultural Arts Department office at (843)740-5854.
Visual Art Camps will be under the instruction of North Charleston’s 2011/12 Artist-in-Residence, Lori Starnes Isom. Drama Camps will be under the instruction of local theatre professional, Julian Gooding, African Drum & Dance camp taught by Rajeeyah Mujahid. All camps are held at Sterett Hall on the former Charleston Naval Base from 9:00am to noon. Mid-morning snacks are provided.
